Germaine Kruip is a Dutch artist whose creative infatuation lies on the interplay between light and shadow and the passage of time. Revered for her innovative installations that creatively manipulate the project space she is working with, Germaine designed the NYC Jil Sander store. There she created a resplendent consumer stage—where each visitor became an actor—complete with revolving panels mirrored on one side: Light becomes dark, day becomes night, from one moment to the next.
In her entry for the Avant/Garde Diaries, Germaine pays a visit to the Amsterdam Kunstverein where she gives her take on the movements that are defining tomorrow’s world. There she meets the dedicated duo behind the Kunstverein; a domestic franchise with bases in New York and Milan that operates as a curatorial office, offering independent publishing and hosting lectures, presentations and screenings. By creating a critical pool and exploring public-private relationships, they reflect upon the manner in which cultural practices are traditionally administered.
The Avant/Garde Diaries is a campaign devoted to discovering remarkable people and the locations they advocate through an ongoing series of curated events and transmissions in Berlin, New York and Shanghai.
