<description_plain>Since the launch of the Denham showroom and store in Amsterdam’s fashionable nine Street district last December, the boutique denim house has been making waves in creative circles. Founded by Jason Denham, the brand is focused on producing jeans of premium quality using japanese selvedge denim combined with artisanal tailoring techniques.

Walking through the store, a series of 'zones' unfolds to reveal its own unique character and story. The length of both walls are decorated with gold scissor brackets displaying complimentary jackets, knitwear and accessories. Customers can customize their own jeans in the 'blue salad bar'. There is also a gallery housing items from the Denham garment library, video-installations and photography.

Contemporary innovation mixed with tradition, the Denham Store 495 is an inspirational model of retail design and a fascinating shopping experience.</description_plain>

<description_plain>Living in apartments crammed to the ceilings with books, six artists founded this bookstore and sometime gallery in the '80s as a means alleviate their living spaces.

An alter to artist's publications, Boekie Woekie specializes in artist's books—primarily self-published works. With each of the thousands of titles sold on consignment, this shrine to the handmade art of publishing is home to cramped tables and shelves filled to the brim with creative treasures.

More a place for collectors than window shoppers, it is nevertheless easy to lose a few hours browsing the delicate, hand-sewn and zine-like artistic musings made by both local and international figures.

Not wanting to turn their backs on their original calling, the owners also host small exhibitions and in-store readings.</description_plain>

<description_plain>Protege of the Paris and London label and shop Kokon to Zai, Destination Shop's owner, Macedonian-born Robert Risteski sought to create a sister store in Amsterdam. Opened in 2008, the blip of a boutique compliments its siblings nicely, even carrying many of the same labels, including KTZ, Marjan Pejoski and Kokon to Zai.

Envisioning his shop as a three-dimensional "monthly magazine," Risteski's curated shop plays his designer mainstays—Horace, Daniel Palillo, Ostwald Helgason, Prisoner of Saint Petersbourg and Mundi, among others—against a monthly "designer in residence." With this rotating structure, the shop is eternally fresh, featuring many one-off pieces and other lifestyle accessories and art like magazines, jewelry, sunglasses and video works.</description_plain>

<description_plain>A concept store grows in Amsterdam. From 90 Square Meters to 290 Square Meters, this sneaker-head haven moved locations in April 2008, tripling in size. From their humble outlying space in the ultra-modern KNSM Island housing development to a central, expansive spot hugging Waterlooplein, 290 Square Meters has developed into the premiere spot for creative-minded endeavors.

The shop's founder, who goes by the mononym, Ido, sought to create a space where diverse happenings—fashion shows, art exhibits, magazine launches—could occur under one roof. And that he did. From hosting the international launch of NikeiD to showcasing brands including Wood Wood, Levi’s, Henrik Vibskov, Futura Laboratories, Malin + Goetz, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, Eley Kishimoto, Surface To Air and many more, the shop is a one-stop hip shop, even offering a custom fixed-gear bike shop.

This treasure chest is now housed in a former bank vault, so come and cash in.</description_plain>

<description_plain>Dedicated to providing all your daily groceries at the highest possible organic level, the Estafette mini-chain runs the Netherlands' best stores to get your ecologically sustainable kicks.

Estafette translates as "relay race," a name chosen for its metaphoric value: the baton in this simile is the produce, handed down from farmer, to merchant, to Estafette's staff, ending up in the consumer's hands as pure and unspoiled as possible.

Like all better eco-shops, Estafette sells Odin fruit and veg subscriptions, offering subscribers a weekly dose of seasonal and vitamin-rich produce.</description_plain>

A bastardization of a Dutch phrase for "what's next," this fashion treasure trove boasts underground high-end labels like Balmain (Ennu is the label's exclusive Amsterdam retailer), Comme des Garçons, PRPS, Neil Barrett, Dries van Noten and Rick Owens, for both men and women.

Located in the swanky shopping area close to the PC Hooftstraat and the Vondelpark, the welcoming Ennu has certainly earned a loyal crew of fans.</description_plain>

<description_plain>As you may or may not know, Dutch design has an outstanding reputation throughout the world (though you might need a background in design to appreciate its minimalist appeal). Bringing this design to the Dutch masses for more than 80 years is the HEMA ("Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam").

At first glance, these stores can just come across as slightly clinical versions of your friendly neighborhood supermarket minus the fresh produce, but their selection (all exclusively developed by and sold at HEMA) includes almost every household item: From bicycle lights to notepads, from painkillers to underwear, and from cosmetics to kitchen utensils, it's all here at reasonable prices and in a sturdy, no-nonsense style.

The lack of frills and the practical nature of Dutch design shines through in the HEMA's items and their packaging, which should interest anyone with a keen eye for all things designy. But even if you’re a philistine when it comes to design, you can still profit from the quality of their wares and their value for money, or from their succulent smoked Dutch sausage (either with or without a roll and/or mustard) which are guaranteed to send any hot dog lover into a feeding frenzy.</description_plain>

<description_plain>Just what the doctor ordered on a lazy, hung-over Sunday afternoon: a small stroll through the largest permanent indoor market in the Netherlands, filled with the flotsam and jetsam of human culture, plus some stuff you might even find a use for.

Whether you’re in the market for antique toys, baubles for your better half, Asian or religious art, antique nudes from the 19th century, the Looier has 72 stands and 90 showcases for you to rummage through. Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays are Family Days at the Looier, when the entire maret turns into the Dutch equivalent of a mass garage sale.

There’s no cover charge and the merchants aren’t pushy, so you can just loiter at leisure and if you get tired or dehydrated from walking, a freshly squeezed orange juice at the Looier café is a stroll away.</description_plain>

<description_plain>Though there’s a whole litter of second-hand stores throughout the city and the infamous Waterloo square market has clad generations of tourists in tie-dye, Hawaii shirts or t-shirts with semi-hilarious or naughty prints, Episode remains the go-to place to get your grubby hands on the best retro threads in town.

If you feel uncomfortable going through piles of clothes that look and smell like they need a visit to the dry cleaners, while the bootleg DVD stand next to you attracts the keener connoisseurs of Asian sadomasochism, you’ll feel better at home at Episode. The prices are a bit higher than on the market or in a dump store, but the clothes look and smell clean and the staff is eager to help.

Besides selections of the finest second hand clothing for the discerning alternative shopper, Episode is a great place for outlandish party or Halloween wear. Also check out their other store in the "9 streets" on Berenstraat 1.</description_plain>

<description_plain>It didn’t take long after the conception of Droog in 1993 for it to become one of the flagships of Dutch Design. Droog focuses on the design and production of day-to-day objects like mops and bird houses, and funky lighting like their famous clothes hanger and milk bottle lamps. They are also well known for their limited edition objects and furniture, and publications such as coffee table books filled with the finest in Dutch design.

While most of Droog's products are fairly expensive, if you’re looking for a special gift for a design-minded friend, there are a couple of fun items that fit any price range.

Droog also has outlets in New York and Tokyo, and their products are available at associated stores throughout the world, so if you get bitten by the Dutch design bug, you don’t necessarily have to go to Amsterdam every time you need a fix. But you’re more than welcome to...</description_plain>
