Schooled from a young age on styles such as jazz, funk and soul, José James honed his craft ad libbing over instrumentals by John Coltrane and Miles Davis.

Mixing soft hip hop beats and barely-there electronica with his jazz and soul stylings, James crafted a sound that was entirely his own and impressed the likes of Gilles Peterson so much, he signed him to his label Brownswood upon his first listen.
