The folk-indie rock duo that is vocalist Victoria Legrand and instrumentalist Alex Scally created a stir with their eponymous 2006 album and belong to the recent rise of celebrated indie music brewing in Baltimore, Maryland, along with Animal Collective.
With 2008’s Devotion, the organs, guitars and chords took a more spirited turn, churning out more straightforward melodies that distilled all of the ethereal, dark puffs of music into heartbreaking nuggets—such as when Legrand sings, “I’d like to be someone / You could finally learn to love again” on the nostalgia-heavy track House of Chambers.
