It might seem out of character to eat at an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant in northern European Amsterdam, but a lot of expats and locals seem to love this place. Why? Maybe because you’re allowed to eat with your hands, or because of the the warm welcome from the owner, or maybe because the hearty food is an ideal antidote for cold and rainy days.
If you’re not into spicy food or peas, beans or sourdough, this is probably not your kind of place. The sourdough pancakes (called enjera) are served on huge metal platters with a variety of spicy stews (with or without meat) and vegetables. If you run out pancakes, but there’s still food left on your plate, you will (almost always automatically) get extra enjera free of charge.
The unpretentious Semhar doesn’t have a stylish interior or posh clientele. In summer the terrace is a good place to enjoy an African banana beer. Make sure not to skip the Ethiopian-style coffee, served with smoldering incense on the side.
